An initial consultation is necessary to determine if dental implants are the best solution for you. During this appointment we’ll want know about your medical history and will examine your mouth. It is important that you are in reasonable general and dental health. The next step will be to conduct some diagnostic tests, including:x-rays and possibly a CT scan. The CT scan is particularly useful as it will show a 3D image of your jawbone, allowing us to calculate the amount of viable jawbone.

Bone to Support Dental Implant

In order for an implant to be successful, it must be implanted into a certain amount of healthy bone so it is fully supported and able to fuse with this bone. If you don’t have sufficient bone then it isn’t the end of the world as new bone can be grafted onto the implant site (see: Gum Graft Procedure). All the information collected from these diagnostic tests is used to plan your implant surgery. We may also take impressions of your mouth and will create a surgical guide which is used to precisely position the implant post during surgery.

Placing the Dental Implant

Placing the dental implant usually takes about an hour. We use local anesthetic to numb your gums, then make a small incision in your gum in order to insert the implant post. Afterwards the gum is stitched back in place and area is left to heal. We will ensure you are kept comfortable during the whole procedure.

The Healing Process

We will give you lots of information and instructions on how to care for dental implant site during the first few days after surgery, as the post begins to integrate with your jawbone. This process is called Osseointegration (see: Dental Implant Failure to Bond with the Jawbone) as the implant post is specially treated to encourage the growth of new bone cells on and around the post.

After three months the post should be firmly bonded with your jawbone. At this stage it can be restored with your replacement tooth. Our dentist will discuss the most suitable type of dental implant for your needs during your initial consultation at Midtown, NYC location and can explain any variations on the above procedures and processes.
