Why Consider Implant Supported Dentures?

Over time, dentures that used to fit well can gradually become loose. This change occurs because the jawbone is reabsorbed and the bony ridge that used to support teeth will become flatter and less able to provide retention. This isn’t so much of an issue with upper dentures as they cover up the roof of the mouth which provides them with additional support. In lower dentures retention can be much more of a problem as the denture is constructed in a horseshoe shape and relies entirely on the bony ridge for retention.  Ill-fitting dentures are also more likely to rub on the gums. Not only is this uncomfortable but it can also accelerate the rate of bone loss in the jaw, making the problem even worse.

How Implant Supported Dentures Can Help

Dental implants can be used to support dentures, keeping them firmly in place so they cannot move or shift position.

The implant supported denture does not rest on the gums but is instead held by the implants.

The exact number of implants required to support a denture can vary but is fewer than the number required to support a fixed bridge. A lower denture can be held in place with as few as two or four dental implants which are precisely positioned to give maximum support and to make the most of available bone. An upper implant supported denture will require a greater number of dental implants, but can also be constructed in a horseshoe shape so it isn’t so bulky and will uncover the roof of the mouth. This will make it more comfortable to wear.

Your implant supported denture will either be bar retained or will have ball and socket attachments. Both are equally secure and we will recommend the most suitable supports for your circumstances. Implant supported dentures can easily be removed so you can clean them each day.

The Process for an Implant Supported Denture

The initial consultation for an implant supported denture will include diagnostic tests to determine the quality and quantity of your jawbone, an examination to determine your dental health and a discussion about your general health. Most people are suitable candidates for implant surgery but there are certain medical conditions which can make treatment less successful. This might be the case if you have a compromised immune system that would affect healing.

We will generally place the dental implants towards the front of the mouth as this is where the bone tends to be thicker, even if you lost your natural teeth quite some time ago. The actual surgery is carefully planned to ensure the implants are inserted in exactly the right location.

The time needed to complete this process can vary considerably. Sometimes dental implants can be ‘loaded’ quite soon after surgery while other times the implants must be left undisturbed for several months. If you require a bone graft then this can lengthen the time required. By working closely with your dentist, we will make sure you are supplied with temporary teeth until your new implant supported denture can be fabricated.
