Do you currently wear dentures? If you do then you’ll know they are not a perfect solution. While dentures can be a very inexpensive way to deal with tooth loss, they will often prove tricky to wear, particularly after they have been used for a few years. Common problems include dentures that slip or move around when eating or talking and this can make it difficult and embarrassing to attend social events.
- denture plaque
- gum inflammation
- positive cultures for Candida (an oral yeast infection)
- higher blood levels of interleukin-6 (protein made by white blood cells that signifies the body is fighting an infection)
Over time, dentures gradually become more and more ill-fitting because the jawbone will change shape and the ridge that used to support your teeth will become flatter providing less retention. This is why an increasing number of people are turning to dental implants, either to stabilize loose dentures or to replace them altogether.
Implant Retained DenturesYou can choose to have an implant retained denture. This will have special attachments on the fitting surface which will clip onto attachments on the implants. Alternatively the implants may be fitted with a bar and the denture will clip onto the bar. Either way, you can be sure that the denture will not be able to move, increasing your biting strength and enabling you to eat a greater choice of foods. You will be able to take the denture out so it can be thoroughly cleaned every day.
Advantages of Implant Retained Dentures
- Improved confidence
- Stability during eating
- Increased preservation of bone
- Decreased gum tissue and shrinkage
- Less food seepage under denture
- Superior aesthetics
- Social interactions accomplished with confidence
- Dietary nutritional benefits
Replacing Dentures with a Fixed BridgeYou may wish to do away with your dentures altogether and we can replace them with a fixed bridge that will either be cemented or screwed onto the dental implants. Your teeth will remain firmly in position as a fixed bridge can only be removed by a dentist. You should find it much easier to eat your favourite foods, including those that cannot easily be enjoyed with dentures.
Dental Implants to Replace Upper and Lower DenturesYou can use dental implants to replace both upper and lower dentures. Many people use this treatment so they can get rid of ill-fitting lower dentures as these are often the most problematic but they can be very good when used to replace upper dentures.
This is because upper dentures are constructed to cover up the roof of the mouth in order to provide sufficient retention. Once the denture is held in position with dental implants there is no need for the upper palate to be covered up and the upper denture can be constructed in a horseshoe shape. This will be far less bulky to wear and you’ll find food tastes more interesting as all the taste buds in the roof of your mouth will be uncovered.
