Many adults are missing one or more teeth and any tooth loss can affect the mouth, leading to a change in facial dimensions, bone and gum loss and tooth movement. This is why it is so important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible and one of the most popular methods today is by using dental implants. While most people will be able to have dental implants, there are a few things which need to be considered. These include:
The Condition of Your Jawbone
Dental implants must have adequate support as the jawbone needs to have a certain density and quality. If you do not have sufficient bone then you can have a bone graft or it may be possible to have mini dental implants which are shorter and narrower than conventional dental implants so they do not need to be surrounded with quite as much healthy bone.
There is a small surgical procedure required to insert a dental implant and it is important that you have good general health. Anyone who smokes heavily or who drinks alcohol to excess is less able to heal after surgery and may not be suitable for surgery. If you have uncontrolled diabetes or any condition that has lowered your immune system, then you might be advised to choose an alternative way to replace missing teeth.
It is important to have good gum health and you must not have any active periodontal disease. Those with a higher risk of periodontal disease are more likely to experience implant failure. Therefore we will treat your active periodontal disease at our office before placing any implants.
Clenching and Grinding (Bruxism)
If you clench or grind your teeth then you are at increased risk of implant failure as this habit places additional stress on teeth and dental implants. You will need to have treatment to resolve any issues with bruxism before having dental implants.
Even though a dental implant is inert, it is surrounded by living bone and tissue so good oral hygiene is very important. You must be committed to a good daily oral hygiene habit along with regular visits to the dentist for checkups and professional cleanings. Age is not a factor in implant success and many older patients have benefited from dental implants. The criteria listed above are far more important than the date you were born.
