If you have recently been told you have periodontal disease, you’ll probably want to know a little more about this condition. It is incredibly common and most adults in the US will have some form of this disease during their lifetime.
Most people won’t have any symptoms until they are in their 30s or 40s and men are more at risk than women of developing periodontal disease. Teenagers are far less likely to have periodontitis although they are at risk of developing gingivitis, a milder form of gum disease.
Periodontal disease differs in its degrees of severity and can range from mild gum inflammation to a serious disease that destroys the soft tissue and bone supporting teeth. In the worst-case it can cause tooth loss and will even affect your general health.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection and is often the result of poor oral hygiene although other factors can increase your risk. Our mouths contain many types of bacteria along with mucus and food particles and over the course of the day these gradually form into a sticky colorless layer of plaque which creates a biofilm over the surface of your teeth and gums. Regular brushing and flossing helps get rid of plaque but if you miss out certain areas in your mouth or fail to brush and floss regularly then plaque can soon harden into tartar that cannot be removed by regular brushing.
Tartar releases harmful toxins that gradually infect your gums and the presence of tartar makes it easier for bacteria in your mouth to thrive. Your body’s immune system will try to fight back, producing inflammation in your gums, but increasing numbers of bacteria will mean it’ll eventually lose this battle. It is the inflammation that destroys your gum tissue, the bone surrounding your teeth and the ligaments that are normally attached from your teeth to the bony sockets.
What to Do If You Think You Have Periodontal Disease
Anyone who thinks they may have periodontal disease should visit our dentist as soon as possible. The early stages of periodontal disease can soon develop into periodontitis which when translated means “inflammation around the tooth.”
Periodontal disease eventually causes the gums to pull away from the teeth creating gaps or pockets in between the tooth and the gum that quickly become infected. Prompt treatment will help remove the infection around your teeth and gums, hopefully before any long-term damage is caused.
