Preventing Periodontal Disease

Is actually much more straightforward than you might imagine. Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease and is caused when plaque bacteria are allowed to build up in the mouth, forming a colorless sticky layer over the teeth and gums.

As bacterial levels increase they can gradually inflame and infect the gums, eventually causing the gums and supporting bone structures to deteriorate.

Over time this can lead to gum recession andtooth loss. Periodontal disease has also been associated with systemic diseases including heart disease and diabetes, so it’s a great idea to look after your teeth and gums.

Oral Hygiene Routine at Home

If you want healthy gums, then it’s essential to establish a good daily oral hygiene routine. This will only take a few minutes out of your day. Ideally, brush your teeth after each meal to help remove food debris and plaque that has become trapped in between your teeth and gums. Gently brush your tongue either by using your toothbrush or a special tongue scraper, as this will remove even more bacteria.

Floss your teeth
Make sure you floss once a day to remove plaque and food particles trapped in between teeth and down at the gum line where a toothbrush cannot reach. Take your dental floss right down to and just below the gum line and hold it so it wraps around the tooth as you bring the floss back up so it removes the maximum amount of debris. Don’t forget to use a fresh section of dental floss for each tooth as otherwise you’ll simply transfer bacteria from one location to another.

Use mouthwash
Mouthwash can help reduce plaque and will loosen any remaining food particles that might have been missed during brushing and flossing. If you can, choose an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacterial levels.

Reduce Your Risk Periodontal Disease

There are certain risk factors that can increase your chances of developing periodontal disease. For example your risk increases with age, particularly if you smoke. If you have any diseases that affect your immune system then you may need to take extra care with your dental routine and you should visit a dentist for professional cleanings more frequently.

You don’t need a referral from your dentist to see a periodontist. Here at D and D Periodontal Associates, we will perform a periodontal evaluation that will identify any symptoms of gum disease so it may be treated before it destroys any oral tissues.
